Grey hair, the new, hot trend?

Say it ain’t so! Most of us spend ages and hundreds of rands each year either at the salon or in our own bathrooms with hair dye kits trying to get rid of greys, and here A-listers like Kate Moss and Pixie Geldof (aka Geldof the Grey, daughter of Sir Bob) actually reckon dying theirs grey is the hot way to go.
According to the Times Online UK, “Growing numbers of women are no longer eschewing the very thought of grey, but embracing a gunmetal mane with pride – and attitude.” Apparently, this trend is a natural progression from our fixation with dying our hair (or blonde-orexia).
My stylist, Shelene Shaer from Tanaz Hair, Body & Nails, reckons you shouldn’t be rushing into your salon to try this trend. “You don’t get grey hair in a tube,” she says. You need to strip the hair and bleach it and then put a toner on it. Aside from damaging the hair, it needs a lot of maintenance and it’s an expensive and time-consuming exercise.
Plus, there’s no getting around the fact that grey hair makes you look older. And frankly, seeing as I spend my time trying to hide my grey roots and not look like a granny before my time, I don’t get this trend.
Although there could be some benefits to letting the grey through:
- Pensioners discount at Pick ‘n Pay on Wednesdays.
- You’re allowed to be cranky. In fact, people expect it from you. Use the power.
- People give up their seats for you on the bus.
- You get to clobber people with your walking stick.
